Well once I first started researching a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I felt stressed by most of the information available to choose from. There are a gazillion sites, each selling their instructions (commonly $24.95. You can get some for free) and you'll see the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have located the miraculous cure. The three that I am about to review are what appear to be amongst the most common (and many times most bizarre).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something similar to this: You take the hard drive off, encapsulate the entire unit in a towel to avoid the surplus heat from escaping, turn the console on for about 15 minutes to cook (some instructions advocate 60 minutes), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and as promised it functions. But why? I have not heard a reliable explanation yet. Here is one of the explanations..."the console gets so hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the set off the red lights to start with"..... And listed below are some prospective risks as pointed out in the same directions "could perhaps damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The unit could catch on fire it gets so hot". I can say I will rate this as the 2nd most ludicrous Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death repair from the three in consideration. Advice: Do not use this fix.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I would not even want to explain how to do this. Quite simply, a rubbermaid tub is full of ice water, some vinegar is put in, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and immersed within the water/vinegar concoction. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard of a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as lots of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. It is really quite reckless and should really be deleted. This repair is easily the most ludicrous fix of the three in consideration. Recommendation: You should not even think about employing this repair if you happen to value your health.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Repair - This is actually the only legitimate fix I've noted thus far. It is as fixed as it gets. Don't use it if however your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. On the other hand, in case the seal is broken and/or it isn't under warranty this fix is the best longterm option. This is the repair in summary; you get into the console, take out the x-clamps, cleanup the existing thermal paste, put new thermal paste on, swap the x-clamps with screws and washers, reassemble the console, overheat, allow it cool-down and it works on about 90% of the units. Suggestion: Take advantage of this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
