The silk manufacture commences with the worm, it is actually produced by glands in the silkworm's head. The silk is then spun out in liquid form through holes called spinneret. As this liquid touches the surroundings, it becomes solid and develops silk. These little worms can each spin roughly a mile of silk and they engulf themselves in a cocoon over a few days.
At this point the worm would change to a moth. Still just before that takes place they are generally killed. The explanation for killing them at this stage is because when they are ready to exit the cocoon they will emit a fluid which dissolves the silk to allow them to exit the cocoon. This process ruins the silk. Obviously not all of them are killed, a portion are set aside for reproduction.
After the cocoon are harvested, the undamaged cocoons are usually brushed to find the end of the silk filament. These are now put on a reel. Up to one thousand yards of silk material are contained in each cocoon. This is referred to as raw silk. A silk yarn can be made from combining several filaments. Taking this yarn and combining it with wool creates silk wool, it is one of the most beautiful products used in the making of garments or goods, beautiful silk wool fabric.
