I had undertaken a project that I was beginning to really feel was beyond my personal resources to accomplish. I had asked a friend and colleague if I could possibly organize a workshop within the New England area that he would teach.
I decided to call my buddy and talk about it, not precisely understanding my goal for the conversation but trusting my intuition. Looking for approval is deeply rooted in me, and at the time it's pretty much all I cared about. But I'm happy I had the courage to call, simply because I received a fantastic gift that continues to support me.
The Gift
My close friend answered the telephone, we exchanged pleasantries, and I started. He listened. I think he understood right away what was happening, and following a pause from me said just a few words. "Judy, go exactly where your power is strong."
Yes. It made sense. And it was truly very simple. Exactly where was my energy strong? Not for this project at this time. It was taking my concentration away from what I truly wanted to do, design and implement in my own workshops.
That is exactly where my energy was powerful. That is what I wanted to be doing, preparing and thinking about. All at once every little thing fell into place.
It felt exactly like it does on the mat, doing Aikido, a martial art that has become a metaphor for me in difficult circumstances.
When you try to force the approach, it is all strain and tension and struggle, and you could wind up getting hurt or hurting your companion. But when you move from center and then follow your ki (life energy), the project is effortless.
As I followed my ki, I knew I would quit the procedure I had begun, and that it was the correct thing to do. Forcing the issue would have strained my resources and, ultimately perhaps, the relationship. My friend understood before I did that the timing wasn't right.
Why am I struggling? Exactly where is my energy strong? These are living concerns. Whenever you feel yourself resisting something, permit these questions be your guide. You will discover you have more power than you think.
