An Energy Alternative: Free Energy
There has been much discussion about what is usually referred to as "free" energy-energy that may allegedly, with the right technology, be drawn straight out of the atmosphere, as well as in very abundant supply. The discussions are about whether this actually exists or not, what it would actually cost were it to be utilized, and if it does exist is it really as plentiful and efficient as it's being thought to be by advocates of research and development into this potential renewable power source.

Flying human beings were an "impossible" thing before the turn of the 20th century and the Wright Brothers' flight.
The greatest claim of the advocates of "free" energy is that enormous amounts of energy could be drawn from the Zero Point Field. This is actually a quantum mechanical state of matter for a defined system that is obtained when the system is at the lowest possible energy state that it could be in. This is known as the "ground state" of the system. Zero Point Energy (ZPE) may also be known as "residual" energy and it was initially proposed to be usable as an alternate form of energy source way back in 1913 by Otto Stern and Albert Einstein. It is also called "vacuum energy" in scientific studies of quantum mechanics, which is meant to depict the energy of totally empty space. This energy field inside the vacuum has been compared to the froth at the base of a waterfall by one of the principal researchers into and advocates of Hal Puthof. Puthof also describes, the term 'zero-point' means that if the whole world were cooled down to absolute zero where all the thermal agitation effects would be frozen out, this energy would still continue to be.
What is not as popular, however, even among practicing physicists, are all the ramifications that derive from this known facet of quantum physics. However, there are a group of physicists-myself and colleagues at a number of research labs and institutions - who are analyzing the facts, we ask such questions as whether it may be possible to 'mine' this reservoir of energy for use as an alternate power source, or whether this background energy field might result in inertia and gravity.
These questions are of great interest because it is recognized that this energy could be altered, and so there is the probability that the control of this energy, and perhaps inertia and gravity, may well yield to engineering solutions. Some improvement has been made in a subcategory of this field (cavity quantum electrodynamics) regarding controlling the emission rates of excited atoms and molecules, appealing in laser research and elsewhere.
